SECOND ANNUAL FESTIVAL FOR VIDEO ART AND EXPERIMENTAL FILM
TO TAKE PLACE AT NEW YORK CITY'S TRIBECA CINEMAS
* * *
NEW YORK CITY - October 31, 2011: Videoart.net, the international network for underground video artists and experimental filmmakers, will hold its second annual Video Art and Experimental Film Festival on December 8 and 9, 2011 at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. The two-day festival aims to introduce New York audiences to the most arresting, provocative, and conceptual pieces born of our era. Drawing from hundreds of submissions, the festival will feature a diverse array of work by 25 groundbreaking video artists and experimental filmmakers from around the world, including the USA, China, Iran, France, Italy, Israel, and the UK.
The videos present a wide array of subjects, ranging from The Cycle of Life by Illinois-based artist and professor Gerald Guthrie to Life, I'm Not In by Sara Rahimzadeh, an award-winning young artist from Iran. The Festival will present the videos over two nights: Thursday, December 8 and Friday, December 9. After Friday's program, a panel of academics and art and film professionals will discuss the expanding field of video art, the worldwide audience for this art form, its relationship to experimental film, the connection between online communities and traditional art institutions, and the explosion in popularity from the days when video art appeared only in avant garde galleries and small museums. The panel will be followed by a gala reception with food and wine where several of the artists will be in attendance to discuss their work with the public.
Festival Director and Videoart.net founder Dan Fine said, “We're enormously proud to present the work of these international artists and filmmakers to the New York City audiences, whose sophistication and appetite for film is unsurpassed." Filmmaker and professor Steven Hoskins, whose video “15 Years” was presented in last year's Festival, confirms the importance of being selected by Videoart.net: "In the two and a half years that I've had videos posted there, [I’ve been in] 14, 15, clearly over a dozen festivals. Almost all of them are because my videos are on Videoart.net. I would not have gotten that exposure without it--no way." Ross Harley, head of the school of Media Arts at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, said: “What really struck my eye about Videoart.net was the way it was bringing together people and projects from around the world and focusing on a New York community.”
The public is invited to all events. The festival will start at 7:30 PM on Thursday, December 8. Two different programs of short works will be screened, the first from 7:30 to 8:45 PM, the second from 9:15 to 10:30 PM. Friday’s program includes a screening at 7:30 PM, a panel discussion at 8:40, and a reception from 9:30 to 11:30 PM. All events will be held at Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick Street. Tickets are available through the Tribeca Cinemas website and on the Videoart.net website. Tickets for Thursday are $12 for each screening, $8 for students. Tickets for Friday are $35 for the screening, panel, and gala reception, $12 for just the reception. Student tickets for $25 include the screening, panel, and gala reception.
