We are pleased to announce that VAEFF 2013 was a great success!
The three-day festival attracted, despite the stormy weather, crowds of video art and experimental film lovers. Artists traveled to New York City from Colombia, Italy, Peru, the UK, and all around the US.
Friday night featured a cozy panel discussion with Alanna Heiss, Kevin McCoy, David Ross (who appeared through videoconference after being stuck in Beacon due to the snow), Mark Alpert, and VAEFF's own Katya Yakubov. Much was talked about, from the omnipresence of television to the importance of recognizing artistic intention. Participants later mingled in a gala reception with food and wine in the cinemas' Varick Room Bar. The festival concluded with the screening of I Send You This Place, a definite crowd-pleaser.

In this series of festival spotlights, VAEFF curators interview several of the artists whose films will be screened at the third annual Video Art and Experimental Film Festival. Each day leading up to the kickoff event at Tribeca Cinemas on February 7th, we bring you a new interview with artists from across the world, from Luxembourgish filmmaker Jeff Desom to Colombian painter and installation artist Rossina Bossio.  Fluidly moving between video and film, British artist Sam Spreckley experiments with the ‘surface’ of his subjects to illicit the viewer to look (and hear) deeper. Creating unique soundscapes apart from the image, and then layering these tracks onto visual studies, such as close-ups of insects, skin and oil, the artist augments our experience of the ordinary, and heightens his subjects’ presence, often bringing them to life more clearly than they appear in physical reality.[...] [...more]

 Filmmaker and professor Sasha Waters Freyer notices how her formal social documentary training, her approach to teaching students and her own personal filmmaking all sculpt and change her understanding of the medium.  The Videoart.net team visit award-winning performance artist and filmmaker Kalup Linzy in his Crown Heights studio, getting an inside scoop on his new work, which is premiering at the 2013 Video Art and Experimental Film Festival.
