VAEFF 2014 submission date will be announced soon
We are pleased to announce that VAEFF 2013 was a great success!
The three-day festival attracted, despite the stormy weather, crowds of video art and experimental film lovers. Artists traveled to New York City from Colombia, Italy, Peru, the UK, and all around the US.
Friday night featured a cozy panel discussion with Alanna Heiss, Kevin McCoy, David Ross (who appeared through videoconference after being stuck in Beacon due to the snow), Mark Alpert, and VAEFF's own Katya Yakubov. Much was talked about, from the omnipresence of television to the importance of recognizing artistic intention. Participants later mingled in a gala reception with food and wine in the cinemas' Varick Room Bar. The festival concluded with the screening of I Send You This Place, a definite crowd-pleaser.
Thanks to everyone who made VAEFF 2013 possible, from the Tribeca Cinemas staff to our panelists and artists. Videos coming soon... See you next year!

Fluidly moving between video and film, British artist Sam Spreckley experiments with the ‘surface’ of his subjects to illicit the viewer to look (and hear) deeper. Creating unique soundscapes apart from the image, and then layering these tracks onto visual studies, such as close-ups of insects, skin and oil, the artist augments our experience of the ordinary, and heightens his subjects’ presence, often bringing them to life more clearly than they appear in physical reality.[...] [...more]

Filmmaker and professor Sasha Waters Freyer notices how her formal social documentary training, her approach to teaching students and her own personal filmmaking all sculpt and change her understanding of the medium. With her short film, You Can See The Sun In Late December, Freyer turns a critical lens onto a subjective experience, yet with incorporating actual texts from online 'confessionals,' she also evokes the fears and concerns of an entire community of isolated women. [...] [...more]

You may not see them at first, but artist Ben Skea implants digital 'traces' throughout his work, using video, computer animation, and printmaking to create a peculiar cross section of the photographed and the fabricated. With his film Trace, Skea evokes a presence that is contained by nature but seen only with the focus of the digital eye. [...] [...more]

The Videoart.net team visit award-winning performance artist and filmmaker Kalup Linzy in his Crown Heights studio, getting an inside scoop on his new work, which is premiering at the 2013 Video Art and Experimental Film Festival. With excerpts from his film, this interview piece shows Linzy expounding on his new work and his thoughts on the 2013 VAEFF where it's premiering. [...] [...more]

Peruvian artist Mariana Tschudi whose work, Sometimes I Feel Like Nationalizing Snake, is being screened at this year's VAEFF festival, was able to chat with me about her new film. Originally an art project that groups together 13 video-art segments, each two-minute long segment mirrors a vision that a person under the influence of the hallucinogenic plant ayahuasca can experience. [...] [...more]

Filmmaker and installation artist Pat Clark shows us how memory is a tangible yet malleable object in his film Decay Theory, constructing an almost convincing "document" of the past with found materials. In our chat, we talk about his documentary background, and how it led to his experimentation with film-slides, home movies, and archived recordings, appropriating these materials to sculpt and fabricate new memories. [...] [...more]

Figurative painter Rossina Bossio takes on her first major video series, The Holy Beauty Project, the third film of which will be screened at the 2013 Video Art and Experimental Film Festival. Award-winning filmmaker Jeff Desom talked with us about his work, Rear Window Timelapse, a shorter version of a video installation he did for the Exit 07 space in Luxembourg. Creating a composite video from appropriated background scenes of Hitchcock's classic thriller Rear Window, Desom weaves together a self-contained world that toys with ideas of scale [...] [...more]
